Are You About To Get Fired, Or Are You Just Paranoid 8 Ways to Tell

Are You About To Get Fired, Or Are You Just wahnhaft 8 Ways to TellIts easy to think you might be on the chopping block, but sometimes youre just jumping at shadows. How can you tell if youre just being paranoid or if you really should be worried? Here are a few signs that your worry is justified. googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1467144145037-0) ) 1. You recently screwed up.A screw-up isnt necessarily the harbinger of doom. But if you did have a big mistake in your recent past, thats probably one thing to consider.2. Youve been iced out.You suddenly find yourself no longer in the loop. Youre hearing about company news from people well below your pay grade. Not a great sign. And if your supervisor or ratgeber recently left the department? Even worse.3. No one will look at you.None of your colleagues are making eye contact. Youre being ignored. People go out of their way not to cross you in the halls or meet you in the break room. And you find people seem to be whispering when theyre in your ear shot. You could just be a pariah, but its more likely that they know something you dont know.4. There have been mergers and acquisitions.Your company just merged or got bought out. Layoffs are probably to be on the table at some point in the future. This doesnt necessarily mean youre going to be fired, but if its one of many of these symptoms, then you should probably abflug looking for another job.5. Youre being set up to fail.The last task you got assigned was actually impossible. Or maybe your responsibility has been completely curtailed. Either way, you can perceive that youve been fully written off.6. Youve been downsized.Has your office just been moved somewhere pretty subpar? Or your cubicle split in half to accommodate another employee? They dont value your space, they probably dont value you all that much either. Or maybe your pay has just taken a cutor been frozen.7. Theyre hiring your replacement.You found a posting that matches your job description on a job search site or the company boards. That is well not a good sign.8. Theres a clear paper trail.Your boss doesnt have any conversations with you now in either passing or about work. Theres always an schmelzglas chain. As if theyre trying to cover their bases. Or perhaps your relationship is just getting weird. Either way, weird boss behavior is never a good sign.

5 Lessons From Marie Kondo to Help You Tidy Up Your Job Search

5 Lessons From Marie Kondo to Help You Tidy Up Yur Job Search 5 Lessons From Marie Kondo to Help You Tidy Up Yur Job SearchAfter youve tidied up your living space, take the time to tidy up your job search.It seems like all of America is decluttering after binge-watching Netflixs latest hit, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo.Kondo, a Japanese organizer extraordinaire, travels across the U.S. and shares her KonMarie method of tidying, which involves mountains of clothes, lots of little boxes, and a mesmerizing folding technique. Its a joy to watch, and itll make you want to dive deep into your closet and dredge out all your dirty cluttered secrets. But once youve tackled that chore, you can apply a few of these tidying techniques to your job search.Think about it By taking some of Kondos organizing techniques and applying them to your job search, you could find positions that fit you better, organize your inbox, and maybe even score that dream job without all the stress.All it takes is a li ttle tidying magic. Start with these five tips, inspired by our favorite professional organizer.1. Create a clear image of what you wantKondo encourages her clients to visualize their end goals. This helps alleviate some of those overwhelming feelings you might have when first starting your journey of tidying up or starting your job search.Like decluttering, searching for a job can quickly become overwhelming, but before you get lost in thousands of job listings, take a moment to visualize what youre looking for. Think of your dream job. What does it entail? Here are a few ideas to get the process rollingA company with a mission you feel strongly aboutA company culture that promotes creativityA manager who values your work and actively shows appreciation and gratitudeA flexible schedule that allows you to take time off when the kids are sickA position that allows you to utilize your best skills each dayWhatevers on your wish list, take a few moments to clearly picture the life you could have with this new opportunity. By taking time to create this vision now, youll be able to stay grounded in your job search notlage get lost in a sea of openings that dont fit your needs and wants.2. Take your job search one step at a timeKondo encourages her clients to declutter one category of their home at a time clothing, books, papers, Komono (miscellaneous items), and then sentimental items. Cutting the process down into these categories helps keep the process manageable.You can take your job search one step at a time, too. Rather than immediately launching into listing after listing and frantically sending out applications, hash out a game plan. The process will look different for everyone, but the PLAN method can fit almost everyones needs. It looks like thisPlanLearnActNetworkDuring the planning phase, youll ask yourself basic questions, many of which youve probably already addressed when creating a clear image of what you want. Assess your strengths, your weaknesses , your professional experiences, and your end goals.During the learning phase, youll start researching. Dig up information and news about your industry and your profession. Jot down names of companies and important contacts. Take organized notes either in a notebook or a Word document to keep track of your findingsDuring the acting phase is when youll start applying to jobs and reaching out to the contacts youve gathered.Finally, youll maintain momentum by networking and staying connected to important people in your industry.By approaching your job search in this four-step fashion, you can help mediate some of your anxieties.3. Everything has a homeThe job-search process can get really messy. This is where Kondos more tangible advice can be applied.Think about where you save those dozens of variations of cover letters and resumes. Are they all on your desktop? How do you keep track of those? If we had to guess, you probably dont. Its important to give these documents a home in a d esignated folder.Once youve submitted each cover letter and resume, rename the files. For example, if you applied to a marketing job with Company X, you could rename the file, CompanyX_Resume or CompanyX_CoverLetter. Then, when youre looking through your folder, youll know which variation youre looking at. When theres a similar job youre applying to, click open that variation for reference.Once youve organized your documents, start organizing your process. Create an Excel sheet to keep track of all the jobs youve applied to. Create columns to showcase the company name, the position title, the web-adresse of the job listing, any contact information, and the status of the application.Be sure to note the date you applied. Then, a week or so later, you can grab the contact information and shoot an email off to follow up on your application. If youre offered an interview, use the Excel sheet to keep track of dates, times, and phone numbers. If a company politely declines, note that in th e application status so you dont make the mistake of applying again. This Excel sheet can become your job-search home base, allowing you to more easily navigate the process.RelatedHow to Follow Up on a Job Application 4. Apply to jobs that spark joy for youWhen youre looking for a new job, its easy to get caught up in the frantic need for income. Youve taken Kondos advice to visualize exactly what you want, but be sure to keep that in mind throughout this process.Just like the clutter in your home, take a moment to hold onto each job listing (not literally, of course) and ask yourself if it sparks joy. Is this a job you could actually see yourself enjoying? Does the companys mission align with your ideals? Do your qualifications match? Do you feel excited while exploring the companys website? If so, apply.If you dont feel that spark of joy, hold off for now. You dont want to waste your time with interviews or get tangled in a job thats not the right fit. As cheesy as it sounds, stay true to yourself in this process and follow your heart.5. Thank the opportunities that dont work out then move onIf youre applying to jobs, chances are youre going to get one of those disappointing, Sorry, but youre just not the right fit emails. Thats OK Just like Kondo encourages her clients to thank each item theyre getting rid of, you can thank each job that doesnt work out.You can show this gratitude within yourself or, if you felt strongly about the position, you can respond to the job rejection. Be polite and concise then leave the ball in their court. Having some closure on your end might help move the process along. Maybe the company will email back with some tips to help your future applications or even give you a second chance.Applying Kondos tips to your job search can help alleviate a lot of the stress, pressure, and even extra hours that come with applying to jobs. Taking a minute to breathe and remember these tips can help you create a more streamlined and less stre ssful experience.Click on the following link for more advice on getting ahead.Does your resume spark joy? Don#8217;t Be Afraid to Say #8220;No#8221;

Don8217t Be Afraid to Say 8220No8221 For manyprofessionals,saying Noat work can be quite difficult. Whether your employer is asking you to stay late, come in early, take on a new project, or help another employee with their own workload, sometimes you feel its impossible to decline even if you really should.Oftentimes, it is just easier to say Yes and hammerout the details later on or stress out privately in your office while you frantically try to figure out how you will get everything done.You have been trained to believe that you must constantly go above and beyondif you want to succeed. While it is true that you have to work hard to achieve greatness, a problem arises when we become so consumed with our work that we are almost literally chained to our desks and phones.Well, fellow professionals, I am here to tell you that it is okay to say No sometimes. In fact, here are three specific situations in whichyou should not only feel comfortable sayi ng No, but obliged to for your own sake and your employers sake1. Your Time Is Maxed OutMost professionals falselybelieve that their supervisors and coworkers understand every detail of their daily tasks and responsibilities. This is not always the case.Often,people just do not know that you cannot fit another project, assignment, task, or responsibility into your daily schedule.It is okay to explain to your coworkers and supervisors that you just cannot take on another project at this time. Explain that it would be a disservice to an existing project you are working on or that you would not be able to dedicate the necessary focus to the new project that it needs and deserves.2. Your Work/Life Balance IsCrumblingPerhaps you are already a workaholic who is known for always taking on additional responsibilities and projects. However, at some point, you are going tobeginfeelingburned out bythe volume of work you have to do.At the end of the day, you are an individual. You are not defin ed by your job. If you are beginning to feel resentment toward your organization, coworkers, supervisor, or position because of all the work you have to do, then it is okay to start saying no. You need totake time to regroup and refocus, to concentrateon the aspects of your jobthat bring you happiness. Trust in the fact that your happiness is equally important and beneficial to your employer. Unhappy workers are unproductive workers.3. You Do elend Feel ComfortableSometimes,your employer may ask you to take on a project or additional responsibilities that you just arent comfortable with.Maybe a slacking coworker has fallen behindand you have been tasked withhelping them catch up on their own responsibilities.Ormaybe you do not feel that you have theknowledge and expertise to succeed at a specific project that you are being asked to take on. In these cases, it is okay to explain to your supervisor why you are reluctant to accept the additional burdens they want to place on your shoul ders.AlthoughYesshould be your typical answer in a professional environment, there are a few instances where saying No is your best bet. The three discussed here are only a few examples, and Im sure youll come across others in the course of your career.When it is time for you to say No,makesure to keep your explanations concise and be prepared to offer an alternate solution. Its okay not to bite off more than you can chew, but you dont want to come across to your supervisor as lazy or not a kollektiv player.Kristina Evans isthe director of HR and recruiting forExactor.

Last-minute office-appropriate costumes to buy or make

Last-minute office-appropriate costumes to buy or makeLast-minute office-appropriate costumes to buy or makeThough you have likely outgrown trick-or-treating, Halloween is one of the holidays thats fun to celebrate, no matter your age. From house-hopping in your funniest (scariest or ahem, risque) costume to hosting a bring-your-own-pumpkin party with friends, October 31 is a more laid-back holiday compared to other winter-time celebrations.Many companies take advantage of the spooky spirit in the air by hosting an in-office bash and inviting employees to dress-up and drink up. Because the purpose of Halloween is to take on a new persona, you may be tempted to go wild, but career experts recommend following a few etiquette rules to maintain your respect. Heres the deal While being a kollektiv player who participates in-office events is important, you also dont want to show up in something scandalous or suggestive, causing others to raise eyebrows.Heres how to navigate this sometimes tricky situation and come out on topRules to considerBranding expert Joy Altimare believes there are a few standard, across-the-board rules to consider if you want to- um- keep your spot on the board. Though these blanket suggestions are appropriate for most, you know your company culture the best and you should use your smarts to exercise your best judgement when deciding on a get-up.First and foremost, remember you are at work Altimare recommends walking a fine line between fun and professionalism. You dont want to come across as too stuffy, but you also probably shouldnt wear cut-off pants to parade around your co-workers, or worse, clients.When in doubt, ask a supervisor. If you have a solid idea for a costume but you are unsure if it crosses a line, Altimare suggests speaking with your supervisor or human resources to establish a clear understand of what is deemed acceptable.Clear out your schedule. If you do want to go next level with your attire, complete with wacky makeup an d say, wings or a boisterous hat - put blocks on your calendar, Altimare suggests. Sitting in your pod with this crazy costume is probably fine, but meeting with your CEO is likely not.Be sensitive. You are a part of a culture ecosystem so be sensitive to your co-workers and do not wear anything that could be considered cultural inappropriate, too-gory or political, Altimare reminds.Costume ideas for allFirst things first regardless if youre male or female, you should feel free and liberated to expand far beyond gender stereotypes. The traditional standards of women wear nurses outfits and men are cowboys is outdated. That being said, career experts have a few ideas for costumes that could work for everyone.Michael JacksonOne of career expert Wendi Weiners favorite, all-time costumes is Michael Jackson in an 80s or 90s look. The accessories and attire can easily be found at a thrift shop, and they dont require much effort, she explains. Since you will also be mostly covered up, yo u wont risk showing off too much skin in the hallways.Wheres WaldoIf youre part of the crowd that procrastinates your Halloween costume, youre not alone. Thats why Weiner suggests Wheres Waldo as an idea for last-minute professionals. Not only is it simple to put together, but its super-comfortable (and super-kosher) to wear sweatpants on Halloween at work.Starbucks BaristaFor most office cultures, coffee is at the heart of the cantina. Without, how would 8 a.m. meetings be a possibility, after all? A mid-afternoon trip to Starbucks is daily retreat for plenty of teams, making Starbucks Barista a funny costume idea thatll make your co-workers chuckle, according to Weiner.Superman or WomanTruly, the options here are endless. You can be Clark Kent, Lois Lane, Superman or Superwoman with a semi-professional Halloween costume inspired by one of DC Comics leading heroes. Altimare recommends this look, since you can wear your go-to button-up and jacket, but with a twist.Group costumeFor a more creative approach, Weiner suggests grabbing the marketing, customer service, engineering or finance team youre part of and encouraging your colleagues to kapelle together in the name of winning the Halloween costume contest. Group get-ups are not only hilarious when executed well, but take the pressure off of you to find something appropriate. Since youll all decide together, you know whatever you choose will pass the code of conduct standard.
