Mr. Obama How to create jobs the stereotypical democrat way Yup, I jumped the shark and got political.  Dont worry, Ill balance it out with another post about how to create jobs the stereotypical republican way. I need to clarify something, though. I think the average American who is very passionate about their political party really doesnt know what it means to be democrat, or be republican.  If they knew and understood all the issues of both parties they might find they thought they were democrat when they were actually republican, or they thought they were republican but they favor democrat ideals. Americans are just funny that way. Another clarification: I am not very political, and not smart enough to be an economist, and Ive never been in a think tank.  I did manage to get an A in Calculus, but I know I dont know A LOT.  So this post might not make sense. Here we go Mr Obama, Want to fix the economy and create jobs?  I think this is the easiest solution, considering you are Democrat and you favor a big government. I know youve dumped a lot of money into stimulus programs, which I dont think is a good idea.  Some of that has gone into bonuses of people who got them because they have the right title, not because they have performed (thats the way I understand it, anyway). How about, instead of dishing out money that the U.S. doesnt really have, you impose more government programs and regulation? Let me give an old example.  Tax season is drawing near.  Imagine how cool and easy it would be if we had a flat tax (or, some other very simple tax system).  People could do their own taxes with a sheet of paper and a pencil it would be uber-simple to understand. In the U.S., however, we have an extremely sophisticated tax system.  I have an accountant do my personal and small business taxes because I dont want to overpay, I dont want to underpay, and I dont want to get into any trouble by the feds (that would be you). The problem, if we switch to a simple flat tax, is that many hundreds of thousands of accounting professionals would be out of work. The system and simplified regulation would make their roles obsolete. We cant have the government make something simplified to the point where it essentially lays off that many people.  Imagine the millions of people impacted (kids, dependent parents, etc.). Lets reverse engineer that example and figure out how to create jobs. I have an idea that will really have an impact: Get your fingers into healthcare. Its already a mess. I think its a mess because of the health insurance industry (not necessarily because of the medical services provided). Remember, the goal here is not to clean up the mess, it is to create jobs.  So what I propose is that you nationalize healthcare, and impose all of the  regulatory  oversight that you can think of in this space.  Imagine how many tens of thousands of new jobs youll create! Im not talking about changing any of the medical service providers, rather adding all the employees well need to make this a national solution. Adding more government control in this area will provide new industries, probably, and increase the viability of regulatory professionals.  Just like the accountants who make a lot of money because of the IRS codes, you can create massive need for these other types of professionals. Dont forget the oversight arm, like the IRS for accounting and OSHA for safety, that will be responsible for taking care of violators.  This oversight arm could be really powerful and grow large (like the Border Patrol) and provide a lot more jobs. That, I think, is the best way for the government to create more jobs create more government programs that will require more governement employees (more jobs!) and create cottage industries to support it! In fact, it can bedangerous now to not be found online as companies and recruiters alike aremining professional networking sites for passivejob candidates. Candidate names are alsoGoogled now more often than you might think and a list of positive search results is preferable tono results. Its okay to pick up the phone. Put the ball in your court. With the number of candidates applying for any one open position today, if youre not following up after an interview with a phone call or a thank you letter, someone else is. This also applies when submitting your resume for a position.Be creative, be persistent. If you feel strongly that you a solid fit for the position, submit your resume more than once. Send it first by email, and the second time, by hard copy in a full-size envelope. Call to follow up on your application or the next step of the process. Yourpersistence and confidencemay help your odds. Its a fine line though, please dont take this as permissionto be pushy and in-your-face. Keep it professional. Its okay for a thank you letter to say more thanjust thank you.In fact, I want you to say a lot more. Sending a thank youletter after your interview gives you a perfect opportunity to follow up where the conversation left off, to argue your candidacy, provide further information, suggest a solution to a problem mentioned during a conversation, forward a proposal for how you would solve a problem or approach a situation, resolve any outstanding issues, or readdress a poorly worded answer or another perceived negative that may have arisen duringtheinterview. If you send a short and sweet letter that merely says Thank you for your time. Book review Turning to one another - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Margaret Wheatley has written another beautiful book, and this time the topic is conversation. Meg (as shes known) believes strongly in the power of conversation and dialogue to bring people together and to promote individual and shared development. She starts the book by explaining her reasons for writing it, and by explaining her view on conversation. She lists a set of principles, which must be emphasized to create deep, meaningul dialogue: We acknowledge each other as equals We try to stay curious about each other We recognize the we need each others help to become better listeners We slow down so we have time to think and reflect We remember the conversation is the natural way humans think together We expect it to be messy at times When I think of many of the discussions going on at work, they are diametrically opposite to this. They are fast and goal-oriented, and leave people little opportuniy to learn together. I think we can benefit greatly from learning to slow down and engage in deeper conversation. The book goes on to suggest a number of conversation topics. The idea is, that you get some people together, and discuss one or more of these topics. Each topic is accompanied by a mini-essay, that you could use to kick off the dialogue. There are ten topics in all for instance What is my faith in the future, What do I believe about other or Am I willing to reclaim time to think. Meg Wheatley is also involved in From the four directions, an initiative that promotes circles of conversation to allow people to learn about leadership. Circles of conversation would probably be a good way to think together about the books topics. Im part of such a circle here in Copenhagen, and Ive found it to be an excellent way of connecting with other people, and of learning more about myself and others. Like A simpler way, Turning to one another is an unconventional and beautiful book, that conveys its message through drawings, photos and poems as well as through standard text.
